Hummingbird Home

2025:

A hummingbird's little nest in our tree, after surviving the winter in tact.
Small and mighty.

2026:

Just last week, I was reading out loud a post from The Marginalian by Maria Popova. My husband was reading Of Mice and Men at the time and I thought it was a cool coincidence that the post was quoting John Steinbeck on the Creative Spirit and the Meaning of Life.

For the most part, what Steinbeck writes was resonant, especially in these days of war and polarization, until this:

“At such a time it seems natural and good to me to ask myself these questions. What do I believe in? What must I fight for and what must I fight against?

Our species is the only creative species … There are no good collaborations … The preciousness lies in the lonely mind of man.” ~ John Steinbeck, East of Eden

My husband immediately bristled. “That’s not true! Just look at what the birds can do!”

That was just the start of a list of what the “more-than-human” world creates. Indeed, just look at the creation of one little hummingbird.
