Reflection Aggression

April 18

2025:

A wood thrush
A wood thrush crashed into one of our windows this morning. She was stunned for a while, but soon recovered and flew away.

2026:

A downy woodpecker sits quietly to recover from the sudden blow.
April seems to be a risky time for window crashing.
I wasn’t sure why, so I looked it up:
During spring, male birds are highly territorial
as they establish breeding grounds; they often see
their own reflection in the glass and perceive it
as an intruding rival, leading them to attack the window repeatedly.
