In the 18th century, British aesthetic philosophers deified “the sublime” in Nature.
Through that aesthetic lens, the vastness of Nature inspired fear and awe.
Beauty is easily contained–lovely and delightful.
The sublime is overwhelming–unbounded, uncontrollable.
So much more than can be taken in at once.
