Tough Ducks

February 8

Two Common Goldeneye ducks in the icy waters of the Trent River
The river is patchy with ice, open water closing in on itself with the cold.
And there they were, clusters of ducks. I took some quick photos from a distance,
impressed with their fortitude in freezing conditions,
only to discover later what kind of ducks they were, with that distinctive white patch on their cheek.
Had I not taken the time and noticed, I would’ve missed my first encounter
with the Common Goldeneye — far from “common”.
