In Canada, luna moths are winged adults for one week only, appearing in late May or early June. This one took my breath away; I just knew I was seeing something rare before I learned anything about them.
Linnaeus renamed this giant silk moth Actias lunaluna inspired by Luna, the Roman moon goddess. Interesting. But why Luna?
Some think it’s the hindwing spots, shaped somewhat like a crescent moon. Others say it’s because they’re nocturnal, moving by night.
